Cookie is from Texas and currently resides in Houston. Born an only child and living
at an early age in a remote part of Venezuela contributed to development of her creative
talents. She cannot remember anytime when painting and creating artworks has not been the
passion in her life.
Since graduating from the University of Oklahoma, Cookie has never stopped
studying, learning, and experimenting with various materials and medias. She
has studied at the Centro Bellas Artes in Venezuela; the Glassell School,
Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas; the Instituto de Allende, San Miguel de
Allende, Mexico; Les Illusiones School, Les Cerqueux, France; University of
London, Chelsea Art School; the Slade School, London, England;
as well as numerous workshops from selected well-known artists.
Her current works are mostly in oil or acrylics and vary from representational to abstract
in nature. Mixed medias on paper and print work such as collagraphs, monoprints, etchings,
etc. are also a large part of Cookie's repertoire.
Artists Statement
My main objective in creating art is to try and move the senses by giving an intensification
of reality. I am particularly interested in engaging the viewer as a participant interpreting
and interacting with my paintings. I generally strive through the use of color, texture, and imagery
to achieve this goal. The materials, subject matter or techniques are of secondary importance to me.
My observations of nature, nesting, and nurturing infinitely interest me and are recurrent themes
in my artworks. The transitions, transformations, and expectations inherent in these areas provide challenges
without end.
Complete happiness never seems to occur in the completion of a work of art ... yet, the promise of it is felt
in the process itself each time a work is started. It is this great insufficiency that drives me. You could say
that the act of creating becomes more essential than the artwork. This self indulgent and obsessive behavior acts
as the discipline through which I can refine my sensibilities.
